Aster Fell

Aster Fell occupies a remote shelf of basalt above the North Atlantic. Its long roof is held low against the wind, while a sequence of stone walls creates a calm inner territory around the entrance court and reflecting pool. The ocean is never presented as a spectacle all at once; it appears through measured openings, across wet stone and beneath the cantilevered western room.

The principal living space runs parallel to the cliff and can be closed into a warm oak-lined interior or opened toward the sheltered court. Four suites sit within the heavier stone volume, each with a private view calibrated to light and weather. A library and listening room occupy the quietest end of the house, separated from the main rooms by a glazed passage.

Materials were selected for endurance rather than perfection. Locally quarried basalt carries the marks of its assembly, blackened oak will silver slowly in the salt air, and the shallow water court gathers rain as part of the architecture. Aster Fell is conceived for long stays: elemental, exact and deeply protective without becoming defensive.
