Mata House

VERRIN / PRIVATE RESIDENCE
An elevated forest pavilion calibrated to rain, airflow and the dense vertical life of the Atlantic canopy.
MATERIAL REGISTER
Black concrete · dark timber screens · rainforest glass
A home shaped from the conditions around it.
Mata House spans a natural fold in the Serra do Mar forest without interrupting the ground below. A long black concrete slab carries the principal rooms above the wet understory, while a planted central court brings canopy light into the middle of the plan. The structure reads as a narrow shadow rather than an object imposed on the landscape.
Sliding timber screens allow the living rooms to move between open pavilion and protected interior. Four suites are set apart along the quieter end of the platform, each with a private outdoor bathing terrace. The kitchen, library and dining room gather around the court, and a narrow infinity pool traces the forest edge without competing with it.
Passive cross-ventilation, deep overhangs and screened openings do most of the environmental work. Rainwater is captured beneath the roof, and the wider estate remains under a conservation management plan. Mata House offers immersion without theatre: precise comfort, long views through foliage and an unusually close relationship with weather.
